Short answer: yes. An AI assistant connected to WhatsApp can answer your customers’ most common questions instantly, day and night: how pricing works, which areas you cover, when you’re available. It can collect the details you need for a quote and hand the conversation over to you at the right moment. Set up properly, it means fewer lost customers and more time for your team.
The problem: WhatsApp messages don’t like to wait
In many countries, most customers of service businesses now get in touch on WhatsApp first. But messages tend to arrive when you’re busiest or after hours: in the evening, at weekends, at night.
And a customer who writes to you has usually written to two or three other companies at the same time. The business that gives the first clear answer usually wins the job. A message you answer the next morning may be a customer who has already gone to a competitor.
What can an AI assistant do?
A well-configured assistant can:
- Answer frequently asked questions: your services, the areas you cover, your opening hours, how pricing works, payment options.
- Collect the details for a quote: for cleaning, the size of the home, number of rooms and preferred date; for removals, the floor, the amount of furniture and both addresses.
- Move the customer to the next step: booking an appointment, a site visit or a quote.
- Hand the conversation over to you when needed: negotiation, complaints, special requests, or anything it isn’t sure about.
What it must not do matters just as much. It shouldn’t quote a price you haven’t approved, make guarantees, or guess when it doesn’t know the answer.
A real example
For İşimiz Temizlik, a cleaning company in Istanbul, we set up and trained Meta’s AI assistant for businesses. As Google Ads brought in more and more enquiries, replying quickly to every message was getting hard for the team. Now the assistant answers common questions instantly, collects the details needed for a quote and moves customers closer to booking, while the team focuses on the actual work and on closing jobs.
What makes the difference is that the assistant is trained on the business’s own information: its services, service areas, rules and tone of voice.
How to set one up
The quality of an assistant depends far less on the tool than on what you teach it. Roughly, the process looks like this:
- Gather your information. Your services, how you price, your service areas, opening hours, cancellation and payment rules. Write down the 20 to 30 questions customers ask most often, with the answers you give.
- Set the boundaries. Which topics can the assistant answer, and when should it hand over to you?
- Set the tone. Formal or friendly? However your customers are used to talking to you, the assistant should talk the same way.
- Test it with real messages. Put past customer messages to the assistant, check its replies and correct them.
- Keep an eye on it after launch. Read the conversations regularly in the first few weeks and fix wrong or incomplete answers. When your prices or services change, update the assistant too.
What to watch out for
- Personal data: the information the assistant collects (names, phone numbers, addresses) is personal data. Review your obligations under your local data protection law, such as GDPR in the EU and UK, including your privacy notice.
- Transparency: tell customers clearly that they’re talking to an AI assistant.
- No “set and forget”: like an employee, an assistant needs regular checks and updates. Assistants left alone after setup gradually start giving out outdated information.
Who is it for?
It makes the biggest difference for:
- Service businesses that get dozens of WhatsApp messages a day (cleaning, removals, building, repairs)
- Businesses that generate enquiries through ads and struggle to reply to each one quickly
- Businesses that receive customer messages outside working hours
If you only get a few messages a day, quick replies and a good greeting message may be all you need.

Frequently asked questions
Will an AI assistant quote customers the wrong price? +
An assistant is only as accurate as the information you give it. When your prices, rules and limits are clearly defined, the risk of wrong answers drops sharply. It should also be set up to hand the conversation over to you whenever it isn't sure.
Will customers realise they're talking to a bot, and does that matter? +
You shouldn't hide that it's an AI. What most customers care about is a fast, accurate answer, and an instant, clear reply at 11 pm is a far better experience than waiting until morning.
Can I keep my existing WhatsApp number? +
Usually, yes. The setup depends on the solution you use, but there are options that work with your existing number through the WhatsApp Business app and Meta's business tools.
Does the assistant handle everything on its own? +
No, and it shouldn't. A good assistant answers common questions, collects the details you need and moves the customer towards a decision. Negotiation, complaints and special requests should be handed over to you.
